More possible solutions: the resurrection of Lancia

As European car industry faces its worst time ever, and Fiat is part of it, more than reading bad news I think we should all think of possible solutions no matter the impact they can have. Of course these are just ideas that come to my mind every time I read statements such as Marchionne’s latest one in which he said the worst has not come yet. In a scenario like that all car makers must be thinking of what to do now in order to survive. Last time I talked about a possible alliance with all European car makers having problems, and now it is time to think more local. Fiat-Chrysler Group is a big player in world car industry and therefore it is composed by several brands that in some cases are extremely popular and exclusive like Ferrari and Maserati, some are well-recognized such as Jeep, or some are a headache in terms of sales figures but have a big potential like Alfa Romeo and Lancia. And when things do not work as it was thought it is time to work with those troubled ones so their potential becomes a reality. It is why Marchionne insists on not selling Alfa Romeo to VW or prepares a common future for Lancia and Chrysler brands. This time Lancia is the chosen one to propose new things to do, taking into account its glorious past and dark present.

In the last 20 years Lancia has become a marginal player in the automotive industry. During the 90’s the brand sold around 200.000 cars per year in Europe with a big offer composed by B, C, D, E and MPV segments. They even sold in Great Britain and was a referent of luxury and good taste in Italy. It all happened when all of those models, Y10 and first generation Ypsilon, second generation Delta, Dedra, Thema and some others, began to have quality problems. The first market to say good-bye was the UK in mid 90’s and then things got worse for Lancia. Since 1998, when they sold 175.215 cars, its total car sales figures began to fall. In the year 2000 Lancia sold 170.348 cars, 108.000 in 2002, 118.000 in 2004 thanks to second generation Ypsilon and Musa. In 2006 Lancia sold 122.000 units. Last year 134.812 Lancia were sold in Europe*. It all means that long-term trend is falling from 200.000 to 110-130.000 cars during the best years for car sales in Europe (2005 to 2007). It is also worrying from the point of view of short-term future, because Europe is heading into its worst crisis and it seems it will last for at least 2 more years. The strategy has been to share models with Chrysler to update the offer with no investment (for D, E and MPV segment) and update the best-seller Ypsilon, while all bad conditions are gone. But is it enough? Lancia may be selling more in 2012 than in 2011, which is good nowadays. But it is still a marginal brand with no recognition and it depends a lot on Italian market. Certainly something must be done, and soon.

Lancia Stratos

The problems around Lancia are well-known by everybody. As so as its glorious past, which can be considered as one of the most exciting ones. Most people remember Lancia as the brand of rallyes, of sporty cars with a fancy touch. Not only Italians love ancient Lancia. The success of the Delta Integrale, the Stratos or the elegance of the Flaminia Sport Zagato, are just few examples of what people had in mind when they heard about Lancia. The company was known for its success in rallyes and the ability of mixing sportiness with elegance. Even though it was not the best-selling car brand in Europe, it had something it does not have right now: personality. There were even ‘Lancistas’ or big fans of the brand as it was always wining championships and was a referent when talking about good taste and power. Of course by that time Europe was not the open market it is now, and several car makers could survive just with their local sales as tax protection was the rule all over the continent. Lancia was not big but was well-recognized outside Italy. It was a small but efficient car maker. A reality that allowed Fiat to purchase it when being safe in just one market was not the rule anymore. Fiat required less competition inside Italy to gain more market share and have a better position in the coming open Europe. Lancia was saved from bankruptcy and its first years under Fiat empire were more or less as before: efficient cars to compete in the rallyes. The Delta Integrale is an example of that period. The rest of the story is a public topic.

But a brand can’t live from its past. It is important to know it, but is not enough to deal with the future. Every company needs to evolve every day always keeping in mind some values that are irrevocable. Lancia had no future building sporty cars with those sales figures. Now is part of Fiat-Chrysler group and has become a global brand thanks to the marriage with Chrysler brand, present in North America. Both brands are called to share models and the development of them in order to create one single company with two names for two markets. As it operates in Europe, Lancia sells its Ypsilon, Musa, Delta, Flavia, Thema and Voyager in most European markets with very few sales registrations. Though the new Ypsilon and Voyager are having good results in Germany, France or Greece, their numbers are really far away from becoming important. Lancia does not add but is becoming a problem for Fiat. In Italy the Ypsilon is among best-selling cars but the Delta does not play the important role it used to, and the Musa gets ready for dying without any clear successor. The first thing Lancia must do is to recover a personality. The brand must be known for something good. It may not be the best-selling car maker but at least Europeans should know more about it. So, what to do?

Lancia current range. Half of it is American made while the Ypsilon is built in Poland. The Delta and Musa are produced in Italy

Lancia should develop 2 sub-brands: the regular one, already known but redirected in order to gain more market share. And a second one: a sporty line in which all those glory products of the past would find a descendant in the present. The idea would be to do what Citroen does with its DS line but based in Lancia’s most famous value: the sportiness of its championship cars. If there are few new Lancia buyers but a lot of old-Lancia fans, why not to create a special line not only for those thinking of the glorious past but also to create a corporate image and a personality for the brand? yes, Lancia is not the sporty brand of the group. It is Alfa Romeo’s duty. But Lancia can become the brand that can take Fiat models (in B and C segments) and upgrade them with luxury interiors and much better quality, while it takes Chrysler models for upper segments (D and E), all of them extremely competitive in terms of price, quality and technology; and at the same time Lancia can offer B, C and D segment cars based on the regular ones but with the most extreme technical features and identified as the lightest and most dynamic passenger cars in the market. In other words, Lancia should do this:

  • For B-Segment, they should preserve the Ypsilon, very popular in Italy, but for next generation it should be based on the next Punto, so the car would gain roominess. The idea is to offer a more luxury and familiar version of Fiat model. That model could find those buyers looking for compact but more comfortable and a bit more luxury B-Segment cars, specially now when, because of design matters, most of compact cars are not comfortable at all. The Ypsilon could become something between a Punto and a 500L.
  • For C-Segment, they should develop a more familiar range of 5 doors hatchback, and a 7 seat, tall Station Wagon, both of them extremely comfortable. Lancia should not use the name ‘Delta’ for this model. The model could use Fiat CUSW platform.
  • In the D-Segment, an all-new model coming from the work together with Chrysler. A family mid-size sedan and Station Wagon for the successor of Chrysler 200 (to be presented in Detroit 2013). That car would be in charge of becoming the first option of the Group in that segment, as the Alfa Romeo would be more expensive. Of course it would be comfort and luxury focused. For ‘E’ and ‘D-MPV’ segments would apply the same situation.
  • Along with the regular Lancia line, there would exist the ‘Champions-line’ which would be composed of a ‘B-Segment’ 2 door hatchback (based on the Punto), a ‘C-Segment’ 3 and 5 door hatchback (based on the CUSW platform) and a ‘D-Segment’ sedan based on the architecture of the regular Lancia. All of them would be built under high performance principles, so they would get rid of luxury features to welcome all materials and techniques that would allow very dynamic and rough driving with possibilities of using the car in some championships.

A possible future scenario for Lancia brand in order to increase its sales figures in Europe, make use of Chrysler alliance and generate a brand image around the best value from its past.

In only one brand there would be two different worlds, both sharing the principles of elegance and performance. One line would be the option for those customers looking for elegance, roominess and performance, while the other one would be the option for those looking for hard-driving with extreme sensations based on elegance and performance. At this point it is important to mention the role of Alfa Romeo and Abarth. If there are sporty Lancias, then there would be a problem with its cousins from Alfa and Abarth. But that’s where the Italian soul would play its role. Italy is well-known for producing the best sporty cars, and is not only a matter of Ferrari. Alfa Romeo, old Lancia, Abarth, Maserati and Ferrari are all recognized as high performance and sporty brands. Of course one thing is what their image is and another thing is what the reality is. Alfa Romeo stopped producing high performance cars but Marchionne’s plans for it are to produce the 4C and much more high-speed cars. If Lancia is there with its sporty line, Alfa Romeo should not worry about it. The positioning of both brands would be different: Alfa Romeo should become the Italian driving machine (easy and high performance driving), while the fast Lancia should be positioned as the rough driving machine that you can use where ever. Abarth would continue producing the small and fastest cars, so at the end Fiat would have a wide range of sporty cars, that are still recognized in Europe for their good characteristics. Would that solve the problem of volume for Lancia? maybe at the beginning would be hard to position a Lancia as a sporty car, but at the end all those looking for a real sporty car could find an answer in Lancia and therefore sales figures could become relevant.

  1. Great ideas. How about developing a new Appia based on the well received Panda with Twinair power plant. Maybe an HF version with the 4×4 system? Something a bit more accessible for the times without loosing design flair and quality execution.

    • Sounds interesting, but I think Lancia needs larger cars to gain a reputation. Fiat brand is very well-known for small cars so it should be in charged of them exclusivey, in my opinion

  2. Very interesting.. Lancia has an incredible potential in badge.. unfortunately Fiat don’t understand this. and not understand then Lancia MUST buid sport car, coupè, Pininfarina car, 4×4… not that was produced from 20 years.. when Alfa was buyng from Fiat: this Alfa inside the group was the cancer, the dead of Lancia and perhaps of the entire group. I don’t know, at this time I hope FIat sell Lancia to other group! They don’t deserve to have a fantastica badge like Lancia in their group!

  3. PS; Remember, Lancia in 1991 had sold more than 300.000 cars in Europe! A number Never doin by alfaromeo

    • Lancia Always sold mainly in domestic market and with the actual situation here in italy it’s more difficult to Push sales! Recent models lancia/chrysler are a flop. In 1991 those 300.000 pcs were including auto bianchi y 10 sold in massime number in italy export was poor ciao 🙂

      • Yes, those 300.000 units were mostly in Italy with government help. Now Lancia is global and will not depend anymore on Italian buyers and government help.

  4. Lancia is by far the most under developed brand in the Fiat group. Its association with Chrysler now is a mortal sin and will probably send a once great proud marque to the scrap heap because marketing, sales and branding have robbed lancia of its soul. Even Top gear UK proclaimed it the most significant brand in the history of motoring. What other company has built only one F1 car which went on to win the championship( be it uinder the banner of Ferrari becuase the cars were just handed over) or went to bat in the sporst car championship and won or has won more world championships in rallying than any other marque and always retired on top. Which other marque was started by a Grand Prix driver who extolled the virtues or safety and quality and actually predated the industrial thoughts of taking good care of their workforce,ONLY LANCIA. FIAt is the ancestral home of Lancia – Vincenzo started his working life there- but I am sure that the opportunity to continue something with soul which I am sure any automobile owner with taste craves has been lost because we live in a world completely devoted to bean counting execs and marketing gurus who dont have any idea that the niche market out there looking for something special exists – NOT EVERYONE WANTS McDonalds – look at VW, Toyota et al to witness the decline of the driving experience . I am completely appalled – I might just go and find a good Lambda.

    • Hi Leonardo, thanks for your comment. I agree, there’s a lot of potential with this brand, but times have changed and a brand can’t survive only from fans. It needs volume but at the same time keep its soul: that’s why I think they should develop two lines: one for volume and other for image and niche. Merry Christmas

  5. I would suggest to Lancia, to change completely the current range. They can’t compete in the same range like alfa romeo, Chrysler or also audi, bmw and so on.
They must create a completely new product range with high performance cars and at the same time small engine and lightweight car body.
Lancia have to bring on, the same spirit like 30 years ago, to be competitive, innovative and involve extravagant ideas on our streets!
Today I would imagine Lancia with a two or maximum three car range, compose with the Stratos (www.new-stratos.com), Fulvia (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/06/return-of-lancia-fulvia-gets-green-light-again/) and maybe a new Delta as a hatchback to compete with the brand new Mercedes A class. At last is not the quantity of the range but the quality and charisma that really counts!!!

    Cheers
    Nicola

    • Ciao Nicola.

The problem with your idea is that those Lancia would find a lot of buyers and Lancia needs volume and profits. Those Lancia of the past were glorious in terms of championships but not in terms of sales (with the exception of Italy). We all want to see the extreme Lancia again but the brand needs to become global with global products, and that’s why Chrysler came to scene. However a particular range of high performance cars would not be a bad idea, only if it is offered along with regular cars. My opinion.

  6. I’m sure that Lancia would be more competitive with only a one car range like Stratos, createt and build by M.Stoschek in collaboration with Pinifarina than the current range. You can find more potentially buyers for a Stratos in a price segmentation for more than EUR 120’000.—, than a normal Lancia city car for only 20’000.—
I think there is no place for a “normal” Lancia. The market is become stronger and all the German car brands are well positioned. The only way is to create a new one and not to follow the others. For example, see at “marussia” they are introducing only one or two cars (b1 and b2). And I’m sure they will be profitable after all the investments. You see, from all the brands, Lancia has one of the biggest potencial to increase their selling. They have a lot of fans and potentially buyers, because the most of it are all over 30 or 40 years old. They have the money to spend and not only facebook fans who are between 18 and 24 years.

If M.Stoschek could build the Stratos I would have bought it. But i would never buy the actually Thema or Delta. They aren’t Lancia 😉

    • Is not about following other brands but positioning Lancia as a different option. Lancia can’t compete with Germans but can become an option for those looking for bigger cars but not as expensive as Germans. A Stratos is a great product but will not bring volume and I am not that sure competing with Porsche, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati is a good idea.

      • Lancia was not build to be a replacement of a premium product. If we think on this way, we never can expect to have customer who buy a Lancia beceause of the story, passion and charisma. If the Stratos have more than 450 hp, a Ferrari engine and the quality is excellen, than you can competing with Porsche, Maserati and so on. But we are thinking diffrent way… and that is interesting. I see now Alfa Romeo suffering because of Lancia. That’s not a good sign. I’m sure that Lancia is on the wrong way. But ok, time will tell us.

  7. Lancia should concetrate on producing low-volume, high-luxury sports cars in B, C, D and E segments. It should be a bland of Maserati and Alfa Romeo but a on a smaller scale in terms of price and volume(no more than 50.000 cars a year). If you ask me, these would be Lancia`s models:
    Delta
    Flavia coupe and convertible
Prisma which would compete with e.g. BMW 3
    Thema a counterpart of e.g. BMW 5
    Stratos

  8. They should never have changed the traditional Lancia grille to the Chrysler style one.
Why does Fiat make do many strange decisions?!

  9. Lancia should be aiming for the Mercedes range. Solid driving cars with a luxury feel, leaving Alfa to do ‘Ferrari’ for the masses. This would allow Alfa to build more sporty cars, while Lancia could aim for luxury.
    A-class = Delta, c-class = Flamina, e-class = thema, etc.

  10. I guess the key word for Lancia resurrection is style. Stay in B,C,D or E segments but do it with style.

Why do Citroen sell DSs at premium prices? because they are beautiful, why people are crazy about a modified Freelander called Evoque? because it is awesome to look at. Minis, 500s, A1s they all are are cute and are selling well. Given that the majority of current cars ranks from boring to blind to see (to my mind comes the horrendous MB CLA), I guess there is a great potencial for a brand that would only make truly beautiful, understated, right proportioned, honest cars. And which one better for that task than Lancia?

  11. Gracias Juan, but I guess you have not understood, I mean good design as positioning. Right now the only brand doing so is Citroen with its DS line.
