Big things will come for Jeep in Europe. After the introduction of the updated Grand Cherokee, which had a good start in June in most of the European markets where it is available, Jeep is working on the introduction of the new Cherokee. This new revolutionary SUV will be officially presented in Geneva 2014 to be launched immediately in Europe and Russia. But as we can see in the picture sent by my friend Manuel Gallina, Fiat is already working on adapting the American-built model to European requirements so it can have better chances to play an important role in the difficult European D-SUV segment. The new Cherokee is expected to be powered by petrol Jeep engines and diesel Fiat engines (1.9 190 hp?) while its price might start at 35.000 euro. If it works and Europeans like it, the Cherokee will help Jeep to gain more market share as the Grand Cherokee is a bit expensive to bring more clients, and the Compass is a bit old to do so. If the brand manages to position it just one step under the premium options (BMW X3, Audi Q5) it may become a serious option to be considered by many clients. Its design, which won’t change from the American version, is going to be its most important feature. Jeep must work as Nissan did with its weird Juke, and avoid failures like the Multipla.
The Cherokee will hit European and Russian dealers next year and is expected to be a cheaper alternative than premium D-SUVs.
The Cherokee will arrive just months before the presentation of the new B-SUV made in Italy. As I personally informed in a previous post, the new small Jeep will be a mini Wrangler that will share platform and components with the Fiat 500X. These models will be Fiat-Chrysler’s main launch in Europe next year.

This launch couldn’t come too soon. The Liberty/Nitro based Cherokee never gained popularity in Europe, hopefully the new Cherokee will be more competitive against the x3 and Q5 as you mentioned.
What concerns me more is the fact that FIAT has now only two truly class competitive brands in its European portfolio, Maserati and Jeep, both of which have an uphill battle to gain market share. Fiat and Lancia/Chrysler are loosing share in the Euro market, Alfa Romeo only teases us with promised product yet no volume offerings have come to fruition to date. There’s much work to turn around the other brands, but FIAT is having serious problems to find resources for new product launches as well as the Chrysler buyout. Something has to suffer, but IMO these iconic Italian brands have suffered too long already and need new product now!

Fiat is working on 2 lines of products. Lancia is already part of Chrysler brand’s plan, and Alfa Romeo will have to wait till 2015 for its rebirth.

Chiedo scusa perché scriverò in italiano, il mio inglese è un po’ tutto da sistemare… (ma se qualcuno vorrà rispondere potrà farlo tranquillamente in inglese).
Ho letto su questo blog anche il precedente articolo su Jeep B-SUV, cercherò di sintetizzare qui alcune osservazioni.
La prima è sul posizionamento del marchio Jeep, in quanto qui viene classificato come un gradino sotto il premium: elevare il marchio ad un livello superiore comporterebbe la perdita di una buona fetta dei clienti americani? Ma poi è veramente un gradino sotto?
Quali modifiche avrà il modello europeo rispetto a quello presentato per il mercato NAFTA? Penso che le modifiche, oggetto di collaudo, possano interessare esclusivamente propulsori e sospensioni… sono possibili altri interventi?
Molto interessanti sono i ragionamenti sulle sinergie dei marchi Fiat-Chrysler: oggi si può fare quello che ieri, per costi, era assolutamente inimmaginabile. E così via al B-SUV Jeep (fenomenale l’idea di una piccola Wrangler) in condivisione Fiat; al Levante parente di Grand Cherokee; speriamo poi in una Jeep di segmento C (in sostituzione di Compass e Patriot in una botta sola) da condividere con Alfa Romeo, la quale potrebbe allargarsi verso l’alto (seg. D) e verso il basso (seg. B); e poi magari, proprio come ipotizzato dall’autore, una piccola Jeep di seg. A su base Panda. Una gamma completa per Jeep, ed in parallelo un’altra gamma completa che dal basso va da Fiat fino al lusso di Maserati passando, con sovrapposizione agli estremi, dal premium Alfa Romeo. (Grazie a Felipe per questo possibile scenario di prodotto). Ma la Jeep di seg.C è attualmente prevista e in fase di sviluppo, o è soltanto un nostro desiderio?
Tornando al nuovo Cherokee… la trovo una mossa molto coraggiosa e specialmente volta a trasformare il marchio da americano a mondiale, al prezzo di sacrificare l’identità stilistica. Con il tempo inizio ad apprezzarne la linea anche se ancora ho qualche dubbio che si risolverà con un contatto dal vero: il retro lo considero ben riuscito sia nelle proporzioni che nelle forme, mentre la vista laterale mi lascia perplesso nel raccordo fra le superfici sotto la linea di cintura ed il cofano motore; il frontale è tutto da vedere in quanto tutto dipende dall’equilibrio dei volumi e dalle sensazioni di solidità percepite (solidità che dalle foto “sembra” non esserci).
Una risposta veloce a Felipe relativa ad un precedente post su 500L: non lavoro in Fiat, sono solo un appassionato di automobili e di tutto quello che ci gira intorno, quindi di design, di meccanica, di comportamento dinamico del veicolo e di piani industriali.

Severin, ti ringrazio molto per il tuo messaggio. È molto chiaro e concordo con tutto. Mi sa che il SUV del segmento C è in fase di svilupo per Jeep e Alfa Romeo. Per la tua forma d’analisi ed i dettagli, sembra che lavori in Fiat. Gracias!
