Which are the new 6 coming Fiat?

Last week Alfredo Altavilla, head of Fiat EMEA, said that Fiat brand will have 6 all-new models in the next 3 years. It is clear that the brand keeps working to bring new cars, no matter the fact that current European car industry crisis seems to continue for at least 2 more years. When I read the article, 4 models came to my mind, but 2 are still missing. The first car to arrive will be the 500X, the B-SUV based on the iconic 500, that will compete with the new Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur, Nissan Juke and many others. The car is almost ready and is expected to be presented in Geneva 2014 and introduced in July (following the 500 anniversary). Unlike the 500L, the ‘X’ is expected to have a sporty/fashion look. The other 2 new borns are the new 500 generation in its regular and cabrio versions. These 2 cars are expected to arrive in 2016, and this would mean that by that year current generation would be 9 years old! The fourth model will be a Panda SUV, but in this case there is no clear information as ‘SUV’ means a lot nowadays. Some people talk about a bigger and higher version of current Panda. Some months ago I wrote an article about the possibility that Fiat could hit the market by launching a 3-door mini SUV based on the attributes of the popular city-car.

The Fiat Viaggio Hatchback has been seen in several Chinese roads. It is expected to hit local market soon and Brazilian roads in 2014. Europe could have it too, by 2015. Photo by: Jokeforblog

But the 2 other models? the first new possible car that comes into my mind is the Bravo’s successor. Fiat will halt the production of the Bravo/Delta this year. Then they will have 1 year stock. After that they should count on a C-Hatchback that could be the 5-door version of the Viaggio. This is mere speculation, as there is nothing confirmed and the Viaggio is still trying to find its path in Chinese market, and its second possible step could be Brazil. Anyway, Fiat will need a C-segment hatchback in some months. The other car that could see the light would be, again a speculation, a B-Sedan, or a competitive successor of the Linea. Fiat is out of the battle of a small but fast-growing new segment: the large B-Sedan. Even if the Linea is an excellent car (it has a great mix product-price) it hasn’t been popular at all (except for Turkey). Fiat could make use of the replacement of the Linea to make a global car that could work not only in emerging markets, but in Europe as well. All these cars should hit the market and help Fiat to recover its market share, while the Punto will have to wait a bit more.

  1. Good news juan, Fiat should make more and more models for the world markets! also i wish Alfa Romeo and Lancia will do the same with some original italian models! because its very shamful to see a good luxurious brand like Alfa Romeo and Lancia, absent in the markt and have just 3 models !!
    If Marchonne will do the same to Alfa And Lancia, it will be the Leader of the auto-markt!
    Thanks for the wealthy topics Juan !

  2. The “big Panda” might be a Qashqai-like 2WD with 4X4 option, which may be substitute for Bravo, a further model may be a 4 meters, 5 doors, 500-styled hatch as near-premium replacement for Punto, dedicated to whealthy EU markets, the new Punto might be built in Bursa (Turkey) in the same plant of the Linea (of which would be the hatch version), this to be sold in growing markets and in EU as “value for money” version of the 5-door 500. Just mt 2 cents…

      • Right. Good point Luca. You’re saying that the current Punto will be replaced by 2 B-Segment cars with very different approaches, just as it happens to the 500 and Panda. Interesting. However, it is hard to understand how Fiat would keep current production levels with premium products (like a larger 500) while Turkey gets the big part.

  4. Interesting topic. Some Italian papers tell that the 5 new models would be:
    1- 500X (2014, B-SUV);
    2-,3- 2nd gen regular 3-door 500 (2015/16, A-Premium segment) and its open version (500C);
    4- 5-door 500 based either on enlarged Mini Platform or B-US Platform (B segment, 2015/16);
    5- a mysterious, maybe bigger, Panda Suv (B-SUV again? C-SUV, who knows).
    That means no future for other “regulars” as the Bravo and, more importantly, the Punto?
    As others suggested before i think and hope that they’re trying to keep both premium and regular lineups. I can see some similarities with Citroen’s strategy: a near-premium lineup, the DS line for Citroen and the 500 line for Fiat and a more down-to-earth, practical even if not low-cost C-Line (Citroen) and Panda line (Fiat). At the moment it seems like the first line (500s) is much more sure than the other, less-profitable one. But i think that both would be necessary; the 500s built in Europe, the regulars (the Pandas? why not keeping separate identities for each model?) in Turkey, East Europe and Latin America.

    • Ciao Giacomo. Thanks for your comment. As you say, Fiat will find first an identity as a brand (two sub brands) and then it will think about a new C-hatchback and a new Punto.

    • And it depends on how you count “new models”. Are the new 500 and the new 500C one model or two models? In the past even the 500 Abarth was counted as a “new model”.

      • Based on Fiat’s way of defining a ‘new model’. The 500L Trekking is a new model for them, even if it is just a ‘off-road-looking’ 500L.

    The new Punto?
