The Mexican Fiat 500 grabs Latinamerica

When Sergio Marchionne chose Chrysler factory in Toluca, Mexico, to produce the small 500 for the return of the brand to American market, he was not only thinking of labor costs. Certainly Mexico is a good place to produce small cars due to less expensive labor costs that allows car makers to have more profits per car produced (normally small cars have less profit). With less production costs then it would be easier to positionate the Cinquecento in the complicated American market, as the small Italian with interesting prices. Mexico is part of NAFTA, North America’s Free Trade Agreement, with the US and Canada, and therefore all products produced within these 3 countries can be exported to their partners without paying import taxes. But besides America and Canada, Marchionne’s mind was also heading to the south. Latinamerican market has become in one of world’s most dynamic, as it has not been affected by financial crisis of last 3 years, and sales continue to grow due to good economic moment and excellent perspectives for the coming years. Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Peru are some good examples of amazing growth of car sales. In 2011 the whole region sold 6.466.328 units (included Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean), up 7% compared to 2010, which means that 12.3 new cars were sold per 1000 inhabitants, still far from developed countries (USA, 40.7 and EU, 36.2). Nevertheless all car makers are investing in the region for coming years as a big part of the population will buy its first car.

Fiat 500 production in Toluca, Mexico, from where it is exported to USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Chile, and soon China. Starting at MXN$199.900 (US$14.000)

Fiat-Chrysler has an important presence in this region. They have factories in Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico and they sell everywhere. And Mexico has become an interesting production pole because of its economic agreements with other Latinamerican countries. It is while Chile and Peru the country with more free trade agreements signed. But unlike Chile and Peru, Mexico is a big car producer. In the region it has free trade agreements with MERCOSUR (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay), Colombia and Chile, and it means they can export their cars paying zero taxes. It allows Fiat-Chrysler to export its Mexican cars to those countries with very competitive prices. One of the latest cars to make useful of this advantage is the Fiat 500. Marchionne was also thinking of this great opportunity because Mexico is the only country that can sell everywhere in the Americas with vert high quality standards and very competitive prices. That is why the Cinquecento is now grabing Brazil, Argentina and Colombia after the bad results that had the European version sold with vert high prices. Now Brazilians can buy it stating at US$19.700, while the car is available in Argentina starting at US$17.600, and US$20.000 in Colombia. In all markets is available with 1.4 8v 85hp or 1.4 16v 105hp. This good price can be seen in total sales. In the first 4 months of 2012, 6.764 units have been delivered to Brazil and 1.135 to Argentina. Eventhough are not big numbers as they are in Italy or in the US, the results of the small Fiat must be analyzed carefully from other point of view.

First of all, Latinamerican market is mostly composed of small and economic cars. The 500 is small but has never been a cheap car, not even in Europe. In Latinamerica this car is positionated as the cheaper competitor of Mini Cooper. It means it is sold as a mini exclusive car. This kind of clients are not really abundant. Secondly, Fiat’s image outside MERCOSUR countries is really bad. That is why selling a Fiat in Colombia, Chile or Peru can become a hard task to accomplish (in 2011 Fiat-Chrysler’s market share was 3.8% in Chile and 1% in Colombia, most of it thanks to Dodge models). And finally, the results obtained by the Mexican model must be compared to the Polish one. One year ago, the European version was not even in the top 100 best selling cars in Brazil, Argentina or Colombia. Year to date results show that Fiat 500 occupies place number 35 among best selling cars in Brazil (# 103 in 2011), and number 56 in Argetina (# 122 in 2011). In Colombia there is no official data but it has been known that the small Cinquino has been a success thanks to its low prices. Though there is not data for sales by model, the arrival of Cinquecento in Mexico has allowed Fiat brand to increase its sales up 112% in Jan-Apr/12. It all means that slowly the Fiat 500 is grabbing Latinamerican buyers as it has done in the other markets where it has been introduced.

Pep Guardiola and his new friend, the Abarth 500

Coach Guardiola is preparing in the best way to his sabbatical year. Here he’s with his new Abarth 500 at Italian Motor Village Barcelona.

Former coach of Barcelona futbol Club, Pep Guardiola, chose an Abarth 500 as his new car. He has admired the characteristics of the small powered Italian and that’s why he will be able to enjoy its Turbo engine in the beautiful Barcelona. One more happy client of these great cars. Good for it.

America: more 500, future SRT Dart/Jeep, and a RAM diesel?

Some news are coming from America. The latest one is related to Fiat and its successful 500. After the good start of Abarth version with 160 hp, Fiat presents the 500 T version. They saw the lack of a mid size engine between the regular 500 with 105 hp and the Abarth one. That’s why the 500 T with 135 hp will become the option for those wanting more performance than ‘just’ 105 hp but can’t afford $22.000 dollars that costs the Abarth. The T version is expected to keep increasing sales as the car will cost $19.000 dollars $15.200 €, and offers a very nice engine with good especifications inside, though the car will not have Abarth logo. With this version, Fiat 500 family in America is now composed by the 500 Pop starting at $15.500 dollars ($12.350 €), the 500 Lounge, 500 Sport, 500C Pop, 500C Lounge, the 500 Abarth and finally the 500 T. Meanwhile the Electric version of the small car was confirmed to be on sale next year.

Another sporty to arrive, not yet though, is the Dodge Dart SRT version. According to Sergio Marchionne, what is only missing to complete the project is “how big is going to be the engine that will move the Dart to create the SRT version”. It means they are really considering a super powered version of the mid size sedan and maybe use a 4 cylinders turbo version with even more than the 235 hp that moves the Alfa Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde. But as people from Autoblog Spain say, the SRT Dart could be moved by 300 hp and 2.0 MultiAir engine. The problem is that there is no 4 cylinder engine turbo available at the moment.

On the other hand future plans of Chrysler group include the elimination of double products. It means the car company does not want to offer anymore two brand options for the same model. That is why they will remove from Chrysler’s range, the Town & Country which is the same car of Dodge Gran Caravan. Instead they will project a lighter minivan to be shared with Lancia and leave the popular Dodge alone. The same destiny for the Jeep Compass as it is practically the same Jeep Patriot. The C-SUV-segment from Jeep will be removed from dealers by the year 2014 to be replaced by a global compact SUV that might share platform with other products of Fiat-Chrysler Group, such as the next generation of Fiat Bravo, which could be replaced by a Cross Over. Regarding this news, it is weird Chrysler wants to get rid of the Town & Country as it was its best seller in 2011 with more than 102.000 units. The MPV is an excellent product that could be even more differenciated from the Dodge version with more luxury interiors. A smaller successor could be also an interesting thing but taking into account that Americans prefer big version of these kind of cars. In the case of the Compass, it has not been certainly a big success and that’s why they should work on a global compact Cross Over to fit expectations of American and European clients and to become a product to expand into other markets.

Finally, based on a spy photo, people from Automotive News comment the possible arrival of RAM pickup with diesel engine. They suggest the black speckled stain seen just above the exhaust (a common sign of Diesel engines) could be the proof that Dodge is working on a RAM diesel. Good news that should be analyzed carefully as Americans are not really used to this kind of engines and big trucks had been always associated with big petrol engines. Although diesel cars have become less unpopular in the last months, their market share is still low. In 2011 only 101.624 cars out of 12.7 million of total passenger cars sold in America, had the diesel technique, and none of them was a pickup.

One more member to Cinquecento family: Abarth 695 Edizione Maserati

Finally, Abarth has shown its 695 Edizione Maserati. It was suposed to be presented in Geneva 2012 but without no explanation Fiat’s sportive brand decided not to do it. As they did with 695 Tributo Ferrari, this version of small 500 will have Maserati’s specific touches outside and inside while it will be moved by 180 hp. Certainly it is another hit by Abarth no matter its price (more than $50.000 €). The mini super car has also sequential gearbox ‘dualmode’ Monza inspired by Maserati Quattroporte and 17″ wheels with strong Maserati inspiration. Inside, Maserati’s luxury is evident: Frau leather for seats, carbon fyber cockpit, and a JBL sound system with 9 speakers and 400 watts. Fiat will only produce 499 units and it seems they will not have any problem selling them as they did with limited edition of Tributo Ferrari.

Though it is a small number of units produced, it is certainly a good news for Fiat brand. They continue to enlarge the successful 500 family making useful of its original shape for several type of clients. Limited editions as Maserati one may not enlarge units sold but create what is called viral marketing: it makes press and people to talk about it again, no matter it was launched 5 years ago. The car is now in the headlines and this helps to boost general sales. Something that takes even more relevance nowadays when competition in ‘A’ segment is getting tough with arrival of VW Up! Italians are excellent producing small and sporty cars: in one hand people prefer Italians minis and in the other one, they dream about having a Ferrari or a Maserati. They are doing very good at offering the 695 Edizione Maserati: they offer both cars in one at a ‘regular’ price and therefore generate a good impact within users and social networks.

With this arrival, 500 family is gettin big now: first it came the regular Cinquecento presented in 2007 only for European markets. Then in 2009, they showed the Abarth version. Meanwhile the 500C appeared. Then, in Geneva 2011 they showed the Fiat 500 by Zagato as a concept and 500 by Gucci, after the success of 500 by Diesel. This year they finally introduced the 500L, a family version of it. The work Fiat has done with this model is an example to follow in other segments. They not only created an icon of design and style, but also a referent in the segment of small and exclusive cars. Fiat could open a new segment within the ‘A’ segment with a car that is practical, but at the same time luxury and original. A car that has become popular everywhere it has been introduced and has been able to project a family design shape.

So far Fiat and Abarth have been able to meet needs from bachelor students who get their first ca up to single business men who want a second and fast car. The target is getting big as the range of Cinquecentos. Sale’s numbers can confirm it: since July 2007 when it was presented in Turin, Fiat 500 have accumulated more than 750.000 units sold worldwide becoming a real success in Italy, France, England, the Netherlands, Greece, Japan and now becoming popular in its new markets: America, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. The 500L will come to increase even more these numbers as it will offer another kind of car based on 500’s main idea: practicality and originality with Italian touch.

The right car in the right place and in the right moment

Google Maps

Google Maps

If you go to Google Maps and type VW Södertälj, one of VW’s main offices in Sweden you will find something unusual. Just in front of the main entrance you will find a red Cinquecento, a car that certainly does not make part of VW portfolio. This particular scene is part of a Marketing campaign of Italians in Sweden for which they parked the right car (one of most representative Fiats nowadays), in the right place (just in front of main entrance of competitor’s headquarters) and in the right moment (just minutes before the Google camera passed). A nice move that for sure will have a reply from Germans.

Fiat 500 beats Mini in the UK!

Once again the small 500 is in the headlines. This time in caotic Europe, more exactly in the United Kingdom, where last month, April, the Fiat was back in the Top 10 best selling cars of this important market. After 2 years without this result, the 500 sold 2600 units which allowed it to become the 10th most popular car in that country beating its archrival the Mini in its natural market. The reason for this success is still unknown but it is certainly important specially these days when competition in A segment is getting tough (VW Up’s take off, restyling of C1/107/Aygo and Twingo) while economic situation in the continent is getting worse. Last year Fiat 500 was number 15 among bestselling cars with more than 25.000 units sold, representing 50% of total sales of the brand. This year, if sales keep their path, the Cinquino could reach more than 30.000 units, a great number indeed. Meanwhile in Canada, the Fiat got a new record with 1.211 units beating March/12 record of 1.207 units. It seems this pretty car, no matter its age, keeps attracting so many people from so many places. Good for that!

New sales record for Fiat 500 in the US

The small Fiat had the best sales performance during April/12 since its launch. 3845 units of the 500, 500C and Abarth were delivered to clients, which represents 336% more than one year ago and 4% more than the previous record in March/12. It brings YTD numbers to 12695 units. If this trend continues we expect total year sales of 40000 units, not far from the first forecasts of Mr. Marchionne of 50000 units/year. The success of Abarth version explains this great numbers. There is 6 month waiting list for this model which will become the biggest part of total sales.

It seems the US market will become largely the second market for the Cinquecento, after Italy, altough March/12 was practicaly the first one, when 3712 units were sold compared to a very poor result in Italy, 3107, due in part to transport strike.
